Hello!
I’ll start this blog off with a little about myself and what I do. I am an editor/proofreader based in the UK, but I’m happy to read pretty much anything in English, including English as a Second Language materials. I qualified from the UK’s Publishing Training Centre in their Basic Proofreading course with a Distinction, which is an industry recognised course here in the UK. This course means that I am fully trained and confident doing things such as Track Changes in Word and the use of the BSI symbols on PDFs and on paper. I also have an LL.B. in Law, so I am comfortable reading legal works and using the OSCOLA referencing system.
I got into editing firstly through a love of reading, but I was also always very aware of the grammar and punctuation of what I was reading, as well as how it flowed, or sounded to me. I decided to investigate the possibility of working as a proofreader and discovered the Publishing Training Centre. I really enjoyed the course and set about finding out how to set up a business (and website!) and manage projects. I decided that I would like to specialise in fiction and legal works, as this is where I have the most experience and knowledge, but I also enjoy proofreading and editing most other things as well.
I have since managed to get this far and attract some clients who have given me excellent and interesting things to edit. I’m forever grateful to those people who were willing to give me a chance when first starting out.
More blogs will follow soon, with topics such as navigating the world of self-publishing and some OSCOLA reference guides and summaries. Hopefully, these will be helpful to someone! Next blog post should be out sometime next week.
