Copy-editing is vital to show off your writing at its best. It ensures that it is easy for the reader to follow, doesn’t have continuity errors and helps to hone your author’s voice, making it shine through your work.
Copy-editing is a good next step if you have already had developmental editing or a manuscript review and will include:
- Checking character traits and knowledge for consistency
- Refining sentence structure
- Ensuring chapters are ordered correctly
- Making sure the writing flows well for the reader
- Structuring dialogue
- Checking timelines
Proofreading comes after copy-editing and will make sure that your work looks its best and does not distract the reader with errors. This allows it to look professional and polished while still keeping your style or voice.
After looking at your own work for so long, it is easy to miss mistakes and ‘read in’ what you meant. A proofreader is trained to pick up on errors just like these, as well as checking other things such as:
- Grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Consistency of headings and layout
- That all pictures and figures are present and correctly referred to
- Consistency of names and places
I can edit and make any necessary amendments and notes on Word using Track Changes, on paper using the BSI symbols, or on Pdf. I am professionally trained, having passed the Publishing Training Centre’s Basic Proofreading course with a Distinction. I am also a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).
